How do virtual music lessons differ from in-person lessons?
There are plenty of practices that transfer seamlessly from in-person to virtual music lessons! However, due to the capabilities of modern technology, there are a few limitations to participation in music in virtual settings. Most notably, video calls have an unavoidable time lag, so it is not possible for multiple people to sing simultaneously over a video call and be able to hear each other in real time. This means that most group singing performances are not possible virtually. However, that doesn't mean we can't play or sing together, or even learn to perform in 2-part harmony! With some additional patience and adjustments to how these concepts are taught and structured, plenty can be accomplished in virtual lessons.
How can sound quality be improved for virtual music lessons?
There is a Zoom setting specifically for musicians that I ask students to enable before class, particularly for private lessons and instrumental classes. Check out this guide to learn more: Zoom Original Sound for Musicians. Additionally, a high-quality microphone and headphones/speakers can go a long way in improving the audio quality during lessons, though neither are required for students.
